Factors Influencing Minimum Order Quantities for Supplement Manufacturing

Willings Nutraceutical sets well-defined minimum order quantities (MOQs) to help you plan your order. This guide will discuss the factors that impact MOQs and answer some frequently asked questions.

What Is an MOQ in Supplement Manufacturing?

We can define MOQ as the minimum number of items a company is willing to sell in one transaction. There are many reasons for setting MOQs, including helping orders cover the fixed costs of production. MOQs also help reduce waste and inefficient use of production time.

MOQs allow both your organization and Willings Nutraceutical to leverage economies of scale to support a high-volume, stable supply chain for your products. This is how we operate efficiently and offer industry-leading turnaround times. Larger orders reduce your administrative burden while allowing suppliers like Willings Nutraceutical to focus on enterprise clients like you. We offer superior customer service, customization and additional resources, which create a better partnership for your brand.

What Determines Your MOQs at Willings Nutraceutical?

We manufacture powders and capsules in-house while partnering in the creation of other products such as gummies, softgels and tablets. While every formula offered by Willings Nutraceutical is unique, these are the main factors that determine MOQs for supplement manufacturing.

1. Cost of Raw Materials and Sourcing

For premium raw materials and materials only available in bulk quantities, Willings Nutraceutical may need to purchase more than the required amount for your order, increasing the MOQ.

Let’s assume that your product contains 1 gram of a particular raw material per unit, but that same raw material is only available in 10 kilogram quantities. Willings Nutraceutical would have to purchase the entire 10 kilograms to produce your order, which would affect the overall MOQ.

2. Complexity of Formulation and Packaging Format

Bottles, jars, stick packs, sachets and cartons all have varying setup and assembly requirements. Products with more complex packaging, multi-ingredient formulations or custom formats typically require larger production quantities.

For example, a stick-pack machine must be cleaned and reset between flavors. This cleaning process is labor-intensive. If your product uses multiple packaging formats, your MOQ may increase due to the added complexity.

3. Minimum Order Quantities and Procurement Costs

Willings Nutraceutical has trusted partners for materials and supplies, which allows us to offer you a comprehensive solution. Like Willings Nutraceutical, each of these suppliers has its own MOQs that Willings Nutraceutical must meet. Additionally, if your product requires customized components such as specialty packaging or unique flavor bases, Willings Nutraceutical may need to purchase a certain quantity of each prior to production. These requirements can impact your MOQ.

4. Variety of Product Flavors and Stock Keeping Units (SKUs)

If you have multiple flavors, packaging configurations or formulations, the MOQ usually applies to each variant.

For example, suppose the MOQ is 500 kilograms of protein powder per flavor, and you wish to produce five flavors. The total MOQ would be 2,500 kilograms of protein powder. Due to the need for separate setups, clean-downs and packaging runs, Willings Nutraceutical cannot divide a single MOQ across various flavors. This is especially true for powdered products or stick-packs.

5. Profit Margins

Willings Nutraceutical also considers the viability of each production run from a business perspective. A higher MOQ may be needed to make a product financially feasible based on the product’s margin and the time involved in setting up a production line. This way, production remains sustainable, and our quality levels remain high.

Minimum Order Quantity Example

If you are interested in having Willings Nutraceutical produce a capsule-based nutritional supplement, the product will involve many individual components. These components include the bottle, the lid, the seal that covers the inside of the bottle, the label and the ingredients needed for formulation. Each component may be sourced from a separate supplier and may have its own minimum order requirement.

If you’re ordering several flavors, you will have multiple SKUs. For example, if you want three different flavors, and each SKU has an MOQ of 100,000 units, you will now require a total of 300,000 units.

Early communication is critical to the success of your project. Our team will explain the process and help confirm that your plans are feasible. We are transparent about our MOQs, so there are no surprises for your brand.

What Are Typical MOQs at Willings Nutraceutical?

Powders 200-500 kilograms of powder

Frequently Asked Questions About MOQs

Here are some common questions we hear about MOQs.

Can Multiple Products Be Combined to Meet One MOQ?

We cannot combine multiple products to meet one MOQ because each product has its own unique factors. In some instances, Willings Nutraceutical may be able to coordinate the production of similar products, but this depends on packaging and regulatory requirements.

Can You Split the MOQ Between Packaging Types?

All packaging types have their own setup time, machinery and process controls. Maintaining one MOQ per packaging type preserves consistency throughout production.

Are There Tiered Pricing Options for Larger Orders?

Yes. Returning customers who have regular or larger orders may be eligible for tiered pricing options. Tiered pricing allows Willings Nutraceutical to plan for future orders and provides you with lower per-unit costs and higher value.
